York Guide:
York is a great historical city in the county of Yorkshire which is cultural in respect of its architecture. Some Roman influence can be seen in different parts of the city. You will also notice that many street names end with ‘gate’ mainly because this is derived from the Viking word ‘gata’ meaning street!
Things to see and do in York
A unique ‘living museum’ of the city is Barley Hall, which allows its visitors to go back in time to the 15th century and experience what life was like back in the day in the shape of a house tour. Here you can get up close and personal with the exhibits by sitting on chairs, looking through drawers etc, whatever grabs your interest. Another exciting element is that the guides in costumes who take groups of visitors through the hall although it is also possible to take an audio tape tour as an alternative. During the summer and on some weekends, special period events are also held here of the likes of plays and medieval markets.
Visit Clifford’s Tower, which is the only part of York Castle that remains today. A wooden castle was built here in the 11th century by William the Conqueror which overlooked the River Ouse. With this castle being burnt down another was built, and was yet again burnt down in 1190. The next reconstruct was blown down and various other disasters followed. In 1322, Roger de Clifford was executed in the tower for treason and so it has been named after him. It is the 13th century tower that can be seen by visitors today although additions were made in the 17th century such as the Debtor’s Prison and Assize Court. It is possible to climb up using spiral staircases and get some great views of the city.
The Yorkshire Museum is also located here with some of the best of Europe’s exhibits contained within it. The history of Yorkshire is the main feature of the permanent exhibits. Others include a focus on Roman mosaics and jewellery, Viking weapons and clothing etc. another impressive set of displays look at the changing geography and climate of the city over the last 300m years! Temporary exhibitions are featured every now and again and the variety always keeps things interesting for locals and visitors alike.
Don’t forget to make a trip to the Treasurer’s House where you can explore a great range of medieval furnishings and some from the 17th and 18th century as well. The history of the house has been formulated into an audio-visual display. The cellars are thought to be haunted so going down there alone is reserved for the very brave!
